So We Took that Babymoon...

One of the first things I did when I found out I was pregnant was...book a vacation!  Yep, I know what you're thinking: girl has her priorities STRAIGHT, yo.  Forget taking out life insurance or starting a college fund (neither of which I've done, as yet, come to think.)

But the babymoon, much as I despise the term, was a much-needed and very good thing, given that M and I are REALLY BAD at taking vacations, just the two of us.  We didn't even really take a honeymoon -- just three days at the end of an extended two weeks with family and friends.  Suppose that's part of living far from everyone...holidays always tend to be with or back to family and friends, because when else are you going to see them?

Anyway, we didn't have much in the way of criteria, apart from not-bank-breakingly expensive/far to fly...oh, and sunny in late February.  Southern hemisphere thus out (cost/distance) and mainland Europe, upon research, not actually that assuredly warm anywhere in late Feb.  So -- not without trepidation -- we settled on Lanzarote, a slice of volcanic Spain off the coast of northwest Africa.  About as warm as you can get within four hours flight on a lowcost airline from Ireland in Feb: it hit almost every button.

I say "almost," because I remained dubious.  The Canaries have a reputation for good weather, yes, but also for restaurant signs offering a "full English/Irish breakfast -- just five euro."  Not necessarily something I'm keen to see if not IN England/Ireland, if you get my drift?

We stayed in Playa Blanca, known as the "family" [read: boring] end of the island -- a good choice.  (We visited Puerta del Carmen on our last day before heading to the airport; reputed for its very English/Irish bars and nightlife, it would probably have been -- and this is totally my hang-up, I grant you -- my muy worst holiday nightmare.)  Our Playa Blanca apartment, on the other hand, was gigantic for the two of us (the suitcases had a bedroom of their own) and fully kitted out.  And the town itself was...fine.  Marginal restaurants with attractive aspects over the beach, good gelato and plenty of opportunity to buy tourist/beach tat.

It also happened to be Carnival while we were there.  Never one to miss an opportunity, I insisted on wigs/masks/feather headdresses.  The following day, I believe it's safe to say the entire island was suffering a collective hangover (yours truly excluded, for obvious reasons.)

But where Lanzarote really excites is the landscape.  It's indescribable.  Like being on the surface of Mars.  Hands down, the best things we did all had to do with its inescapable volcanic heritage.  My advice, if ever you go, is to get out of town:

The road to Timanfaya National Park

PS: FYI, they don't like you actually setting foot on volcanic rock. Be speedy.

And then of course, there was beach.  We found our favorite, which also happened to be nude-optional -- a startling realization at first, but we got used to it, even if we didn't partake ourselves.  For several days, we had corners of it entirely to ourselves.  If that's not bliss or close to, I'm not sure what is.  M schooled me in paddleball (blame the pregnancy), but I read faster, so, in respect of classic holiday activities, I think it all comes out in the wash.

On our final day, we visited the Fundacion Cesar Manrique, former home of the island's favorite son, whose art and architecture is indelibly fused to the volcanic landscape.  An inspiring take on what you can achieve when you build with the land, rather than against it.  Suffice to say, Ireland's 1950's box semis somehow lacking in comparison...

And in the blink of an eye, our week was over.  But we'd proved to ourselves that We Can Vacation Together, Just the Two of Us, once and for all.  Here's hoping it's not another seven years before we do it again.

Young Ones

So here's an interesting juxtaposition with which to (belatedly) kick off Y-Banshee 2013...

A photo of me "as" a baby Y-Banshee:

Day 1
And a photo of me "with" baby Y-Banshee:

Day 12,053+
From "as" to "with" in 33 short years -- funny how something as small as a preposition can signify such proportionally outsized change in circumstance, eh?  Regarding the 33 year timeframe, certainly others have, ahem, made the leap in less -- I feel I'm teetering on the edge of old for first-time motherhood.  But if my body (as I often instruct it) chooses to pay attention to the age I feel, rather than physical reality, we should be in great shape, clocking in at around 25/26.  Old enough to have some common sense and income...young enough to be, well, not-quite-30.

But enough about me and my age insecurities, more about Junior!  (I agree, far more interesting.)

He/she -- no, we don't want to know beforehand (or rather, I don't want to know and M is going along with it) -- currently clocks in at roughly grapefruit-size on the highly scientific citrus-fruit-to-fetus scale, projected ETA of mid-summer...and (get this!) already has fingerprints.  This last point is thus far my absolute favorite weird and wonderful fact of fetal development, because it means Junior's already a singularly identifiable individual.  If I think about this too long, it really starts to blow my mind -- not just a daughter or a son (their being in relation to me), but already a little person in his/her own right.  Yep.  Mind officially blown...

Of course, there are many items of a less philosophical nature to keep an overactive mind busy ahead of the big day.  My online stroller research for example, up until a few weeks ago, had reached near-obsessive levels.  For the good and sanity of all, I impulse-bought a second-hand Quinny Buzz travel system, which I'm very happy with.  But after it spent two weeks parked behind our kitchen table -- for lack of anywhere else to put it -- my attention is now (equally obsessively) focused on where the hell in the house we're going to fit all this extra gear.  Beware M and friends-with-vans, major furniture moves ahead.  And a serious IKEA trip...

On the names front, we're keeping mum.  I'd heard the stories, of course, about those weirdly opinionated souls, who take your preferred name and destroy it in seconds with an inappropriate childhood recollection ("Alan?  Alan?!  Like 'Underpants Alan' we were school with?!") or celebrity association.  ("Ah, yeah, Samantha's alright...like that girl who went mental on 'Emmerdale' last year.")  I guess I just didn't realize that those isolated, weirdly opinionated souls were, actually, EVERYONE.  And that apparently NO ONE has the same taste in names that M and I do.  (Don't worry, we're not saddling it with #Hashtag or anything that might bring the authorities/Twitterverse after us.  Not for the moment anyway.)  So sorry, Internet, you'll just have to wait and see on this count...

Finally, I'm also happy to report that M and I have our priorities -- financial and otherwise -- firmly in order: within weeks of finding out about the pregnancy, I had us a sun holiday booked for early Spring.  Vitamin D is so important during this early formative period, wouldn't you agree?  Bring on the water aerobics and quality Kindle time.

For this, and for so many other experiences in the coming months, I cannot WAIT...

Candidates for the 2012 Poet Laureate

A letter to my musical snob brother (I write this with love and respect...)

Come on Nick, admit it.  You know, deep down in your soul, that you love pop music.  Sure you spent your teens and early 20s as a Phish/Widespread Panic devotee, traveling to 3-day concerts and noodle dancing out of imaginary boxes you drew in the air...but recall that I wasn't as drunk as you at [my own] college graduation.  I saw you throw your hands up in the air with pure joy when Britney's "Hit Me Baby One More Time" came on.  In vino veritas.  Am so happy (though you might not be) that I could share that magical moment with you.  A good sister never forgets...

The brilliant news, Nick?  Daniel Kim has once again put together his seminal pop "Dan"thology for the year.  It's a beautiful thing, so only fair to share with you, Nick, and the rest of the Internets.

And yes, I've clearly got WAY too much time on my hands this evening, because I also decided to transcribe the entire mash-up -- all eight minutes of it -- to see if the amalgamated lyrics could be pop song in their own right.  I particularly like the phonetic Korean towards the late verses...I won't lie, I didn't transcribe that myself.  No one has THAT much time on their hands.  (Though someone clearly did, since I found it online.)

Anyway, never say popstars aren't poets...

Danthology's Pop Mash-Up 2012

Oh I'm at a payphone
The sun goes down, the stars come up...
So whistle baby, whistle baby let me know
Where are the times gone?
The universe will never be the same
So whistle baby, whistle baby

Here. We. Go.

All I wanna do is love your body
Ooh baby baby, ooh baby baby
Tonight's you're lucky night, I know you want it
Ooh baby baby, yeah baby baby

I had a way then, losing it all on my own,
I find it so stupid, so why should I hide...
Don't wake me uuuuuuuuppppp
...that I love to make love to you baby
Sorry for party rocking.

Some nights I stay up cashing in my bad luck
Some nights I call it a draw.
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone...

Now I'm at a payphone...
Hell yeah, dirty bass
Ghetto girl, you drive me craze
Hell yeah, dirty bass...

Oooh oooh oooh oooh, let's go
Turn up the music 'cos this song just came on
Here and now, I'm talkin' here and now
Let's go
Turn up the music if they try to turn us down...
I'm talkin' here and now, I'm talkin' here and now

It's not about what you've done,
It's about what you do it.
Cross my heart and I hope to die
It's all about where you're goin'
No matter where you been...
Can I only stay with you one more night?

Oooh oooh oooh oooh
Hey, I just met you...and this is crazy
But here's my number...so call me maybe
I think I've finally had enough
I think I maybe think too much
I think this might be it for us
Blow me one last kiss...
Last kiss

Hey, I heard you were a wild one, wild one
'Cos that's just how we do it
Dirty dancing in the moonlight
Take me down like I'm a domino
Let's go!

Feelin' so right...
Oooh baby baby, dancin' in the moonlight
Oooh baby baby, got me feelin' so right
Oooh baby baby

I let it fall, my heart
And as it fell, you rose to claim it
It was dark and I was over
Until you kissed my lips
And you saved me

You chewed me up and spit me out
Like I was poison in your mouth
You took my light, you drained me down
But that was then, and this is now

Well let me love you...
Don't wanna break your heart
Wanna give your heart a break
I know you're scared it's wrong
That you might make a mistake
This is the part of me
That you're never gonna, ever
Take away from me...

Well let me love you...
There's just one life to live
There's no time to wait, to waste
So let me give your heart a break.
This is the part of me
That you're never gonna ever
Take away from me...

So if by the time the bar closes
And you feel like falling down
I'll carry you home...TONIGHT
I'm wide awake
We are young...
I can go fast, I can go slow
I can places nobody else goes
TONIGHT
I'm wide awake
We are young...
I can go fast, I can go slow
I can places nobody else goes

If I was your boyfriend
I'd never let you go, UNH
Take you places you ain't never been before
Baby, take a chance or you'll never ever know
I got money in my hands that I'd really like to blow
Swag swag swag, on you
Chillin' by the fire while we eatin' fondue
I don't know about me, but I know about you
So say hello to falsetto in three, two
Swag heh...

Good morning and goodnight
I wake up at twilight
Starships were meant to fly...
We don't even have to try
Oppa, gangnam style

And it feels like I am just too close to love you
We've reached our climax...
As long as you love me
Hey, sexy lady...woahoahoahoh
It's always a good time
I hear you heartbeat to the beat of the drum
Baby, you light up my world like nobody else...
As long as you love me
Hey sexy lady...woahoahoahoh-oh-oh

Shine bright like a diamond
Oppa, gangnam style
Shine bright like a diamond
Ahhhhhhhh
Pound the alarm...

I've been everywhere, man, lookin' for someone
Someone who can please me, love me all night long
I've been everywhere, man, lookin' for you babe
Lookin' for you babe, searchin' for you babe

At skyfall...

I'm bullet-proof, nothing to lose
Fire away, fire away
Ricochet, you take your aim
Fire away, fire away
You shoot me down, but I won't fall
I am titanium
You shoot me down, but I won't fall
I am titanium

Like when you said you felt so happy,
You could die...

They don't care where we go
If they do, we'll get lost in a crowd of peoplec
I've been looking for you forever
Baby we go, together
NBaby we go, w, we go

We'll run where lights won't chase us
Hide where love can save us
I will never let you go
